Augmentative/Alternative Communication

Offering disabled individuals more opportunity to gain, retain their ability to communicate.

What is Augmentative and Alternative Communication?

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to the use of a device to replace natural speech and/or writing. These devices can range from very low-tech devices, such as communication boards, to very sophisticated speech synthesizers.

A communication device is normally sought after traditional speech therapy has been found to be unsuccessful.

What to expect from the evaluation

The evaluation will consist of accessing the individual’s physical and cognitive abilities. This information paired with the requirements of the client will be used to select an appropriate device. The goal is to meet the client’s needs while taking into consideration the client’s abilities and the environment in which the device will be used.

Who benefits from AAC?

Individuals who have lost or never had the ability to speak and/or write effectively would benefit from an AAC evaluation. Disabilities that affect a person’s ability to speak or write would include, Cerebral Palsy, ALS, head injuries, stroke, or other neurological/neuromuscular disorders.
