Vocational Rehabilitation

Guide for Applicants Publication

The Office of Vocational Rehabilitation provides services to assist eligible individuals in overcoming the limitations imposed by physical or mental disabilities while maximizing their potential for employment.

An individual who is eligible for services is one who:

Has a physical or mental impairment that constitutes or results in a substantial impediment to employment and can benefit in terms of an employment outcome from vocational rehabilitation services.

Requires vocational rehabilitation services in order to prepare for, enter, engage in, or retain gainful employment.

Thousands of Mississippians are successfully employed each year through the teamwork of the different OVR divisions working together to meet the employment needs for each individual.

Deaf Services are provided by specially trained counselors in deaf culture, audio metrics, and manual communications skills. Types of services include communication devices and interpreting services. The Office on Deaf and Hard of Hearing is a division of MDRS that focuses on the needs of the deaf and hard of hearing and enhances services to this population.

Deafblind Program is a division of MDRS that focuses on providing technical assistance to individuals in which a hearing and vision loss are present at the same time.

Supported Employment provides services to individuals with the most significant disabilities who require intensive and ongoing supports to prepare for, secure, retain, or regain employment.

Transition Services provides an integrated program of education and vocational training for adolescents to make the transition process from school to work easier.

AbilityWorks, Inc. is a network of 17 community rehabilitation centers located throughout the state, which provides vocational assessment, job training and actual work experience for individuals with disabilities.
